Ingrid Lukas, Fai Baba, Bärtsch/Sha, and OY at the Zurich Meets London Festival
Taking the centenary of Zurich’s Dada movement as its cue, the Zurich meets London festival from 17 – 21 May celebrates everything about the city that isn’t a cliché. Naturally, it includes live music.
A double bill on 19 May sees Ingrid Lukas and Fai Baba perform at the Shacklewell Arms in Dalston.
The pianist and singer Ingrid Lukas was born in Estonia but has lived in Zurich for almost two decades. Elements of Estonian musical traditions have always found their way into whatever music she was creating. With a line-up that includes keys, drums, dance and electronic devices, she brings together traces of classical music with post-rock dynamics and electro beats to mesmeric effect.
Guitarist Fai Baba is a maverick. A singer/songwriter/guitarist of limitless creative energy, his musical tastes range from punchy glam rock choruses to labyrinthine psychedelic guitar excursions, and from tender folk songs to the darkest of raw blues.
A day later, on 20 May, Nik Bärtsch/Sha and OY will appear at the Rich Mix in Shoreditch as part of the Serious Space Shoreditch Festival in cooperation with Zurich meets London.
Pianist Bärtsch is best known for his percussive fusion of minimal music and jazz with his band, Ronin. Here, he will appear in a duo for the first time in the UK with Ronin’s bass clarinettist Sha.
OY are multi-instrumentalist and singer Joy Frempong and percussionist Lleluja Ha. Combining electronica with melodies that reflect Frempong’s family roots in Ghana, OY are an extraordinary live spectacle.
