Better get used to Pina Palau!
“You Better Get Used to It” demands Pina Palau, and who are we to disagree! It’s her third album, and it’s available now from Mouthwatering Records. The singer/songwriter from Zurich “loves the incongruous, the contradictory, the petty, the awkward and the ugly found in all of us” and refers to her finely spun indie/folk songs as a “scuffed up mirror, because if you take the time to listen you will eventually see yourself in it.”
“You Better Get Used to It” is – continues Pina – a “sound diary of transformation” based on crush followed by heartbreak, “exploring everything that goes unspoken between two people: confessions, contradictions and questions…from frustration with old patterns to fresh sonic colours, from uncertainty and pain to a new sense of self”. Fear not: difficult experiences haven’t turned Pina’s muse sour or, indeed, difficult. Recorded in Berlin and Zurich with friends including Simon Borer (aka Long Tall Jefferson) and the Berlin-based band Meagre Martin, her songs are calm and airy in mood, blessed with beautiful turns of melody and, above all, the glorious shimmer of a pedal steel guitar right up-front.
