Julie Meletta Exploring the Troubles of Love
Fresh from the presses, and following up her radio hit “Chic!”, comes “Amarcœur”, the second EP from the Ticino-based singer-songwriter Julie Meletta. Blessed with a voice that would have fit the company of France Gall, Françoise Hardy and Sylvie Vartan perfectly, she has updated the old yé-yé recipe of sweet vocals and bouncy rhythms to super-catchy effect.
As far back as she remembers, Julie was a passionate writer of short stories and mini-novels. The soundtrack to her childhood, meanwhile, was provided by her father’s Beatles collection and her Parisian mother’s love of French Sixties music. Originally very much averse to writing and singing about love – “kitsch”, she reckoned – she has now fully embraced the concept. The five songs of “Amarcœur” – a word creation bringing together the title of Federico Fellini’s cinema classic “Amarcord” and the French word for heart – tells the story of five different kinds of love, all with the narrative power of a short story and an irresistible electro-yé-yé chorus.
