Hermanos Gutiérrez Teaming Up With Dan Auerbach

Los Hermanos Gutiérrez have landed a real coup with their new album, their fifth. “El Bueno Y El Malo”, released on 28 October 2022, was not only produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach in his studio in Nashville. It was also releases by Auerbach’s own record label, Easy Eye Sound.

Despite the album’s title, there is nothing at all “bad” about “El Bueno Y El Malo”. Stephan and Alejandro Gutiérrez both play the guitar – and they both don’t sing. Theirs is the sound of two guitars – one playing the rhythm, the other the melody – in beauteous harmony, with only the occasional hint of percussion and, on the one track, a guest spot by Auerbach, added to the strings’ relaxed plucking and twanging. The result is a warmly harmonious music suffused with a sense of wistful romanticism, reminiscent occasionally of Ry Cooder’s Californian desert blues. Soaking in the tranquillity of this album, it is impossible to imagine Stephan and Alejandro – their mother Ecuadorian, their father Swiss – ever indulging in a brotherly tiff.
