Mehmet Aslan Seeking the Sun
Out on the Basel-based Planisphere label on 11 November 2022 is the debut album from Mehmet Aslan, “The Sun is Parallel”. Mehmet, a DJ raised in Switzerland by Turkish parents, trawls the richly rewarding history of Turkish pop and underground music to produce his very own wildly eclectic brand of present-day dance psychedelia.
At the heart of ‘The Sun Is Parallel’ “is a heartfelt search for universality”, it says in his press pack, adding: “It’s no mean feat in a world and a time in which conflict and division can sometimes seem so powerful as to render old myths about ‘the power of music’ as naive.”
Working solo, with a live band that includes an drummer and a guitarist, or collaborating with artists like the legendary Italian percussionist Valentina Magaletti or the Spanish singer Niño De Elche, Aslan strives to find the common language between us all. With the resulting music ranging from the hypnotic post-Maghreb/Flamenco groove of “Tangerine”, the Turkish psychedelia of “Tangerine Sun” and the dark, eerie and programmatic “There is no Such Thing as Herkunft” to the moodily Morricono-esque “Garden”, “The Sun is Parallel” is a beautifully crafted album packed with surprises.
