Muthoni Drummer Queen Following the “River”

Entitled “River”, the new album by Muthoni Drummer Queen was released on 19 November 2021 by the French indie label Yotanka Records. Following on from the remarkable “SHE”, “River” is the fourth album from a super busy artist whose formidable presence has enriched countless festivals and recordings over the past few years, including a stunning 12” single with Jacknife Lee, the LA-based producer for the likes of U2, R.E.M. and Taylor Swift.

Born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya, Muthoni Ndonga has been working for nearly a decade with Swiss producers Jean “Hook” Geissbuhler and Greg “GR!” Escoffey. Together, they have created a deeply innovative hybrid style based on hard-edged electronic beats woven and organic Eastern African instruments, rhythms and harmonics.

With “She”, Muthoni Drummer Queen celebrated a number of women who were/are pioneers in the fight for equal rights for women. This time round she looks at our connection to the places and cultures we grew up in. Here’s how she explains her philosophy: “Many cultures believe in the idea of a return to the roots in the same way that water follows a natural cycle, running down the mountains to build rivers and oceans, only to evaporate and return to where it all began. I, on the other hand, believe that we never really leave the source that has created us; the source is in us wherever we are.”
