Amami Make the “Soleil” Shine
20 August 2021 saw the release of long-awaited debut album by Genevan trio AMAMI via Bongo Joe Records. For anyone following either AMAMI, the band, or Bongo Joe, the label, it won’t come as a surprise that “Soleil” is a marvellous bundle of culture- and continent-fusing energy, driven by a splendidly idiosyncratic approach to music making.
AMAMI are Raphael Anker, Gabriel Ghebrezghi, and Inès Mouzoune. Anker is a veteran of the multi-faceted musical cauldron that is Geneva. He is best known for his involvement in the Ethiopiques project, Imperial Tiger Orchestra. Ghebrezghi contributes vocals and keyboards. He is also known as Tapes Adventure or Ghostape. Mouzoune adds bass, synth, and – says the PR blurb – “energetic vigour” to the brew. The results are innovative, intoxicating, and, as the title promises, very hot indeed.
