Electropop from “Der Elektrische Mann”
“Exactly the music Germany needs now”, says Nikel Pallat from the legendary Berlin band Ton Steine Scherben. The almost as legendary Reverend Beat-Man is equally impressed: “Wow, das ist geil!” which can be roughly translated as “wow, this is shit-hot!” “Musik Musik Musik” is the debut album from Der Elektrische Mann. Released on 26 February 2021 via Boom Jah Records, it is distributed worldwide by Hamburg-based Broken Silence Distribution.
Der Elektrische Mann from Berne is a trio consisting of voice and electronics wiz Ane H, previously a member of industrial pioneers Swamp Terrorists and the electro-Brasilian post-techno duo Da Cruz; guitarist Christian Sommerhalder, also a member of Climbing Tree and Lieblingslieder, plus a composer of film soundtracks; and Mariana Da Cruz, the singer who lent the above mentioned Da Cruz her name, voice and inspiration. “Der elektrische Mann begins at the same ideological point where the Neue Deutsche Welle began”, say the band, meaning: a punky attitude to the exploration of cheap electronic hardware and the use of the German language for their lyrics. Citing influences like Der Plan, Tödliche Doris and Palais Schaumburg, Der Elektrische Mann manage to breathe a fearsomely intense dose of new energy into a style of music that has long lingered in the shadows, awaiting exactly the sort of rediscovery and revitalisation that is happening here.
