Nadja Zela Recovers Her Voice
Four years ago, in her grief after the sudden death of her husband, Nadja Zela was no longer able to sing. Struggling to recover some sort of equilibrium, she sought solace in music, more specifically, music of all kinds that dealt with death and grieving. After two difficult years, the urge and ability to sing returned and with it the desire to add her own contribution to the long tradition of requiems.
13 November 2020 sees the release of Nadja’s musical attempt to come to terms with her bereavement. “Greetings to Andromeda. Requiem” is just that, an 18-track song cycle inspired by the classical form of a requiem. The resulting album – a double on vinyl – is dark and mystery-driven but also joyous and playful. Playing guitar and harmonium herself, an idiosyncratic array of synths adds depth and variety to the sound of her regular bass/drums/guitar band. “Greetings from Andromeda. Requiem” will be released via Patient Records/Irascible Music, a few weeks later, in December, follows the “Andromeda” song book.
Nadja Zela has long been a much-loved mainstay of the Zurich music scene. Starting off with Rosebud, an all-female outfit in the early 1990s, she has been involved in a variety of musical and theatrical projects, including albums by Anna&Stoffner, Los Dos and Big Zis, as well as “Isn’t Nits”, a tribute album to the Dutch band the Nits.
