Ikarus flying high

Mosaismic”, the new, third album by the young Zurich-based quintet Ikarus, was released on 5 April via Ronin Rhythm Records.

The house label of zen-funk pianist Nik Bärtsch and related acts is a guarantee for intriguing, complex and often mesmerising music. Ikarus are no different. What makes them so fascinating is their use of the human voice. Abandoning explicit language in favour of pure vocal sound, instead of standing out and delivering a message, the voices become part of an instrumental mesh which alternates between tightly minimalist structures reminiscent of Bärtsch’s Ronin, and melodious ruminations of a more pastoral nature.

“When every musicians’ ideas are expressed clearly”, writes band leader Oliveras, “and the ear zooms away from the individual pieces, something bigger and more beautiful emerges. At times our opinions clash like tectonic plates and this produces something of a productive earthquake. The energy released then is also registered on the recordings, which definitely reverberates in the listener.”

Distribution of “Mosaismic” is via Galileo Music (Germany), Propernotes (UK), Challenge Records (World), and Irascible Music (Switzerland).
