Panda Lux exploring their heart

Panda Lux return from their two-year hiatus with a very fine fourth album. “Herz” (“heart”) is out now via Mouthwatering Records.

Almost broken by the work on their conceptual genre-mix LP “Blumen I – IX”, Panda Lux – two brothers and two childhood friends who have played music together since their early teenage years – took a two-year sabbatical. Samuel und Silvan Kuntz used the time to produce an instrumental guitar album under the name Hoehn; drummer Moritz Widrig worked in German theatres and composed the music for several feature films; bassist/cellist Janos Mijnssen co-produced Faber’s latest album; and Silvan Kuntz recorded his first solo album under the production supervision of Sophie Hunger.

Gathering together in a mountain hut was conceived as a new start. Instead, the precipitated a full-blown crisis. However, the will to make music together was never extinguished. When the band members dared to re-convene in the studio, they discovered that their enthusiasm and their communal muse had fully recovered. Having decided to go for a much more direct approach to songwriting, Panda Lux teamed up with producer Aaron Ahrends (Von Wege Lisbeth, Catt, Say Yes Dog) and retired to a remote studio in Southern France. The result is a superbly crafted dozen songs, all featuring memorable hooks and strong, autobiographically honest German lyrics (“Einen Sommer lang, haben wir uns geliebt; So einen Sonnenbrand hatte ich noch nie”). Oh, and barely any of the songs breaks the three-minute barrier!
