Black Sea Dahu bring Everything

The much-travelled and -admired Black Sea Dahu return from the studio with more musical magic, a superb new album entitled “Everything”, out now via Mouthwatering Records.

Singer and songwriter Janine Cathrein’s bunch of Dahus have come a long way both literally and metaphorically since that unforgettable single of theirs, „In Case I Fall for You.“ Few bands anywhere in Europe will have played more gigs in recent years than they have. It goes without saying that these experiences have led to a near-telepathic understanding in a band that placed great value on friendship and mutual support from the very beginning.

The magic of “Everything” isn’t based on „instant.“ Instead, the album draws its singular power from intricately woven vocal melodies that flutter in the wind like the ribbons of a kite and from instrumental arrangements brimming with understated twists and surprises, including some fine contributions from Amours Sur Mars, a string quartet with whom Black Sea Dahu sometimes perform live. Central to their music, however, remains Janine Cathrein’s voice and songwriting. Inspired and necessitated, she says, by the death of her (and guitarist/bassist Vera’s) father, the songs take as their starting point the cyclical nature of life: „I didn’t make an album, I built a space to endure this grief.“ After filling her notebook with innumerable thoughts and ideas, the band spent several months in a house in the hills of Eastern Switzerland to turn the ideas into songs that were finally recorded under the guidance of their long-term producers Gavin Gardiner and Paul Märki. Like the most beautiful blues, this album wrests quietly uplifting music from profoundly melancholy emotions.
