Gold Dust From Stephan Eicher
He’s been at it for a long time but a new album from Stephan Eicher still comes as a major source of joy. His latest opus is called “Poussière d’Or” (“Gold dust”). It’s his eighteenth and it’s out now on Barclay/Universal.
Born and raised in the canton of Berne, Stephan has come a long way from Grauzone and their hit “Eisbär” in 1981. Seven of his albums have reached the top of the Swiss charts, seven more the top four. Often singing in French as well as German, English and his native Bernese dialect, what makes his success all the more remarkable is the fact that he has stuck with unflappable conviction and elegance to a very personal vision of what a contemporary “chanson” should sound like, and what it should say. In 2021, Eicher was awarded the Swiss Music Prize, the most important artistic – as opposed to commercial – music award in Switzerland.
