Dino Brandão Turning Breakdown Into Music

Following the cinema release of a similarly titled documentary, “I Love You, I Leave You” is the second solo album from singer/percussionist/multi-instrumentalist Dino Brandão. It is out now via Two Gentlemen. For many years, Dino’s voice and instrumental skills have been an integral part of Zurich’s music scene, including an album “Ich liebe dich”, recorded as a trio with Sophie Hunger and Faber, in 2020.

Neither film director Moris Freiburghaus nor, indeed, Dino Brandão himself, could have foreseen the traumatic events set in motion by the artist’s first return in more than fifteen years to his father’s home country, Angola. As he was facing his family’s past and questioning his own identity, he suffered a severe mental crisis. His friends and family, in turn, were confronted with the very immediate need to find a way of helping a man suffering a psychotic episode which threatened to derail his life completely. The resulting film is harrowing, courageous and sometimes even funny. The “soundtrack” is described as an extension of, as well as an accompaniment, to the film.
