Diving Into the “Wicked Girl Era” With Lateena and Bony Fly

Fresh from Geneva’s ever-innovative Bongo Joe Records comes “Wicked Girl Era”, sing-jay Lateena’s exuberant exploration of queer dancehall, Latin, and Afrobeat vibes alongside producer Bony Fly aka Mateo Echeverria.

Fleeing the homophobic and dangerous environment of Jamaica to be granted the status of political refugee in 2019 in Zurich, Lateena Plummer has earned herself a strong reputation as a vitally energetic and body-positive transgender singer, performer, and activist. Dreaming of transforming the homophobic and sexist dancehall scene into an environment celebrating an LGBTQIA+ perspective, she found the openness of the Swiss music scene hugely inspirational. “The music scene in Switzerland brings this fresh feeling to my music and has opened doors to my music”, she says. “Switzerland was where I was found. Because if I was still back home, no one would know about Lateena.”

Lateena and Bony Fly met in 2023 at the Fusion Festival in Geneva and quickly bonded over an impromptu backstage freestyling session. Bony Fly/Echeverria is the founder of a record label, Dimelow, and has released a number of collaborative records with the likes of Nino Augustine, Lenky Don, and Jne Side, blending club music with dancehall culture.
