Giulia Dabalà Exploring Shades of Anger

Available now from Irascible is “Cruda”, Giulia Dabalà’s follow-up to her much-admired debut “Gold”. Recorded with two very different producers – Hook (Muthoni Drummer Queen, Murmures Barbares, etc.) and electronica specialist Ripperton –, “Cruda” (“raw” in Italian) explores the various shades of anger from the perspective of a woman. Women’s anger, she feels, is often belittled or even ridiculed, thus taking away its power as an emotion and a force to overcome difficulties and pain. Musically, the album offers intriguingly contrasting vibes, going back and forth between the two worlds of the two producers: hard electronic beats tinged with African rhythms, and moodily minimalist ambience.
Dabalà, born in French-Swiss canton Vaud, was raised in a musical family that also loved to travel. Spending a part of her childhood in Burma had a lasting impact on her perception of the world. Her musical career was kickstarted by winning the overall 2020 Demotape Clinic award at the m4music festival in Zurich.
