Long Tall Jefferson Exploring New Horizons

Entitled “old sun, new horizon“, Long Tall Jefferson’s new album, released via Mouthwatering Records, is in the shops now.

It’s almost night, a lake shimmers in the background and Long Tall Jefferson – aka Simon Borer – is sitting behind a campfire and gazes into the distance. The cover image of his new album may be flirting with cliché – and yet, it perfectly captures the mood of a fine collection of songs which are – of course! – entirely cliché-free. After LTJ’s recent excursions into the poppy realms of computers and samples, the guitars are now firmly back in the driving seat.

In order to retain the freshness of the demo tapes, LTJ and co-producer/multi-instrumentalist Mario Hänni began to work on each song by recording two instruments at the same time, two guitars first, then bass and drums, with very few overdubs – a soft pedal steel riff, a discreet synth buzz, an understated burst of feedback – added later. The resulting sound is delightfully loose. The songs, meanwhile, follow the by the now familiar LTJ pattern of gorgeous and serenely flowing melodiousness.

LTJ’s recording career began in 2016 with a debut album “I Want My Honey Back” which Neue Zürcher Zeitung said was the work of a “magician of fine detail”. Since then, he has played well over 400 gigs and festivals all over Europe and co-founded the musicians’ collective Red Brick Records. More recently, he has released an album with Fai Baba, “Löwenzahnhonig”. Together with Daniela Weinmann (Odd Beholder), he produces a songwriting podcast, “Songs und so”.
