Coilguns‘ Odd Love

Entitled “Odd Love”, the punk-noise combo Coilguns’ new album, their fourth, is out now via their own label, Humus Records. “Odd Love is a way to summarize our relationship with music in itself, the overall music business and our band life”, says their singer Louis Jucker: “We’re amazed how long this band has lasted so far and the importance it has taken in our life, knowing how randomly it started.”

Three members of the band – guitarist Jona Nido, drummer Luc Hess and Louis Jucker – became friends as teenagers in the out-of-the-way Jura city of La-Chaux-de-Fonds. The idea for Coilguns came to them whilst they were touring Europe with the German post-metal outfit The Ocean Collective. In 2013, with no one else prepared to put out their debut album, they formed their own label, Humus Records. The home of the likes of Elie Zoé, Anna Aaron, Rorcal and Dirty Sound Magnet, Humus has developed into one of the most important hubs of independent music in Switzerland.

Tracked by Scott Evans, and mixed by Tom Dalgety (The Pixies, Royal Blood) and Robin Schmidt (Liam Gallagher, The Gaslight Anthem), “Odd Love” was recorded at Oceansound in Norway. Much more complex and dynamic than their self-description of “punk-noise band” would suggest, Coilguns have delivered a multi-layered masterpiece of progressive post-rock metal
