At Last – Meimuna’s Debut Album

It’s been taking a while – but here it is, the debut album from Meimuna, the singer/songwriter from the Canton of Valais who has created more than just a ripple of excitement with a series of five beautiful and well-received EPs. Entitled “c’est demain que je meurs”, it is out now via Radicalis Music. The album was co-produced with the film composer Ella van der Woude.

Meimuna – aka Cyrielle Formaz – burst on the scene in 2017 when she won the “demo tape of the year” award in the category “pop” as well as the prize for the overall “demo of the year” at m4music in Zurich. Having studied history of art at the university of Lausanne, Cyrielle devoted herself entirely to music for the subsequent couple of years, be it as a solo artist or a collaborator in theatre productions and other projects. Clearly a woman of many talents, she then moved to Brussels to study illustration before returning to Switzerland to devote herself exclusively to music once again.

Like her career, Meimuna’s chansons are never rushed. Slow and measured in tempo, her music is carefully constructed around voice and guitar, with other instruments like piano or woodwind added in subtle touches here and there. The hushed tones of the music reflect the quietly ruminative and personal nature of the lyrics. Interestingly, Cyrielle Formaz, like Nick Cave, is a strong believer in a disciplined work schedule, working every day on her music irrespective of mood or circumstances. She also likes to use Brian Eno’s set of “Oblique Strategies” to help with inspiration.
