Arthur Hnatek Adrift – Well, Not Really…
Entitled “Adrift”, the first full-length electronic album from Arthur Hnatek, percussionist extraordinaire, is out now on Mouthwatering Records.
There is nothing Arthur Hnatek likes more than the challenge of throwing himself adrift – and finding himself anew! – in a new collaboration. Thus, his CV includes work with the Erik Truffaz Quartet as well as pianist Tigram Hamasyan, who records for Nonesuch Records, and a long list of acts like his own Arthur Hnatek Trio and SWIMS, an exploration between acoustic improvisation and functional dance music, or Andrina Bollinger, the experimental singer from Zurich.
However, for this, his first full exploration of solo studio work Hnatek decamped to a remote chalet in the Swiss Alps, armed with only a synth, Eurorack modular cases, some drums, and a laptop. The only collaboration this time – another first – is with Fabrizio Rat, an artist working on the borders of prepared piano and 909 techno. “Almost all of my productions start with improvising on the drums and chopping/processing the acoustic sounds to assemble electronic and sequenced patterns” says Hnatek. the Zurich-based musician. Inspired by the likes of Four Tet and Floating Points, the results range from irresistible dance bangers to dreamy electronica soundscapes.
