Pekodjinn Taping the Street

Tunisian-born producer Pekodjinn follows up his mind-bending debut LP, “Dharba” (2023) with another salvo of percussive dynamite, “TN TAPE”. The album is out now via Geneva’s habitually groundbreaking Bongo Joe label in cooperation with Les Disques Magnétiques. “Constantly searching, Pekodjinn spends hours tweaking his machines in his small home studio, driving his roommates carazy”, it says in his excellent (big kudos for that alone!) press release.

Born and raised in Tunisia, Pekodjinn somehow ended up in Geneva where he swiftly became an integral part of the flourishing musical underground. Describing his style as “afromaghreb”, he aims to create a music that avoids “any form of orientalism and kitsch” in order to break free “from the codes imposed on us, the children of the diaspora”. Blending elements from trap, dub and Angolan/Portuguese batida with the violins of previous generations to powerful effect, “Peko defends a street approach where credibility is more about value and studio performance than appearance and trendy edits.” (to quote that press release once again).
