LEILA Singing for a Generation
Entitled “Generation” and out now is a new 7-track EP from Grönland-signed LEILA. The artist regards the new collection as a companion piece to her debut EP, “Burnout”, released last December, and so it is also made available as part of a coloured double vinyl package, “Burnout Generation”. “In this collection, I delve into the struggles faced by youth”, she explains, “the challenges of adulthood, and the journey to find one’s place in the world. I’ve written songs about topics and states of mind that I still can’t fully grasp, seeking answers to the many questions I have.”
Born and raised in Berne and previously a member of the successful indie-combo Jeans For Jesus, Leila Šurković, 23, describes herself as a “tomboy”, suffers from ADHS and regards her music as therapy. Her music could be loosely described as indie with a hint of electro and the odd salvo of drum’n’bass beats thrown in. She writes her lyrics in English to reflect her cross-cultural upbringing in Switzerland with a Bosnian father. Gifted with an instantly recognisable voice that somehow imbues even the fiercest message of defiance with a joyous hue, her songs are catchy, confrontational and deeply personal, all at the same time.
