jan SEVEN dettwyler Finds New Colours
“Schwarz auf Grün” (Black on Green) is jan SEVEN dettwyler’s forteenth album. It might also be regarded as his second since his radical conversion from a Prince-adoring star funkateer with multiple top ten LPs in Switzerland to a bonafide soul singer with German-language lyrics. “Schwarz auf Grün” is out now on sevenmusic records.
A couple of years ago – then still simply named Seven -, Jan Dettwyler risked a step that was as courageous as it was unpredictable: Prompted by a challenge by the German rap group Die Fantastischen Vier he co-wrote a song in German, discovering in the process that he enjoyed expressing his feelings without the filter of a foreign language much more than he had expected. Continuing on the path embarked on with “Ich bin mir sicher!” (2022), funk-grooves are rare (though not entirely absent) on “Schwarz auf Grün”, making way to an R&B-imbued style of chanson and kitsch-free German Lieder that is entirely Jan’s own. Co-writing with various young and established songwriters helped Dettwyler to come to terms with the end of a long relationship, providing his new song with considerable emotional heft. East London-based producer Yoad Nevo (Goldfrapp, Sia, Sugababes etc.) and John Van Nest in Los Angeles (Michael Jackson, Chaka Khan, Macy Gray etc.) helped to lift Jan Seven Dettwyler to the next soul level.
