Chiara Dubey Basking in the Moonlight
Newly out on Livana Music is “Chandani”, a new album from singer and violinist Chiara Dubey, composed and recorded in collaboration with Los Angeles-based electronica player Robot Koch (sic). “Chandani” is a girl’s name and, according to the Collins Dictionary, also means “the light coming from the moon at night” in Hindi. It is the perfect title for an album that is one long invitation to drift away on a daydream with music that envelops the listener like a balmy summer night.
Chiara Dubey studied violin and composition in Zurich and Lugano before completing her studies in London. In her compositions, she aims to merge the sound qualities of classical music with electropop to create soundscapes that linger in a fascinating twilight between ambient abstraction and intricate detail. The outstanding feature of her music, however, is her voice – an ethereal instrument that hovers over her music like, well, yes: “Chandani”.
Robot Koch – real name, surprise surprise, Robert – is a German producer, composer and artist based in Los Angeles. Clearly a workaholic, his discography comprises dozens of solo works as well as collaborations not just with leading lights from the world of electronica but also the likes of Norah Jones or Max Richter. He is involved in a number of immersive multi-media productions and was the recipient in 2014 of the German Musikautorenpreis in the category “Best Electronic Music Composer”.
