NNAVY Wants to Get Closer

Entitled “Closer”, the new EP released independently by Lausanne-based R&B singer/songwriter NNAVY stands for far more than just a sexy encounter in a candle-lit room between two consenting adults. In fact, the three songs are the outcome of a songwriting camp organised by Spotify Africa in partnership with COLORSxSTUDIOS in Kenya in order to forge closer links between the local R&B scene and like-minded songwriters, producers and artists from other African countries and the black diaspora.

Blessed with an effortlessly flexible soul voice and an un-showy but deeply emotional singing style, the Burundi-born NNAVY quotes Jacob Collier, Yebba, Daniel Caesar and Yussuf Dayes as influences and has shared a stage as support act for the likes of Arlo Parks, Lionel Richie and November Ultra. “Closer” was created with local musicians, Karun and Msaki, and produced by Nairobi-based Hendrick Sam. Whilst two of the tracks, “Let Me” and “Feel”, have a classy R&B vibe, the third, the lengthy “Raise Your Glass”, combines an intriguingly syncopated electronic groove with complex and multi-layered vocals. The successful first of many such experiments, we hope.
