Moonpools Want to Play „Hide and Seek“

Dreampop quintet Moonpools return with a new EP, their third. Entitled “Hide and Seek”, it was conceived, recorded and self-produced in the course of countless sessions and discussions in their band room in Basel. It is available from Young & Aspiring.

Formed around the silkily voiced Marcie Nyffeler, Moonpools wear their influences on their sleeve. In thrall to mostly British shoegaze and dreampop bands like Ride, Alvvays, Cocteau Twins and the revived Slowdive, they have developed in leaps and bounds since their first release in 2019 to carve their own niche in a genre that has enjoyed a remarkably fertile renaissance in recent times. Beautifully phrased vocals with lyrics alternating between unconditional emotional openness and dry self-irony demand our attention from the off. At the same time, the subtle instrumental arrangements reveal a new layer of sound and vision with each spin. Whilst their record label presents “Say Anything” as their “focus track”, the EP’s most intriguing and original piece is the six-minute closing track, “See-Through”.
