Alina Amuri Finds the Way Back To You
Entitled «Back to You», the Congolese/Swiss singer/songwriter Alina Amuri’s new album, her third, was released in mid-September via Pop-Up Records. Loosely conceived as a concept album, «Back to You» is a deeply personal record of Amuri’s recent, first return to her birthplace, Kinshasa.
Born in the DR Congo and raised in Switzerland, Amuri may be blessed with a classic soul voice. However, whilst acknowledging the influence of Lauryn Hill, Alicia Keys and Nina Simone, her songs have always defied easy categorisation. Now, however, her African influences have become much more to the fore, especially in her percussive treatment of instrumental arrangements. Highlights are the most “African” of her new songs, “Sister”, a vocal duet with Rachel Nyangombe, as well as the bouncy “Keep on Dancing”, and the title track where she promises: “Soon I’ll be planning my way back to you”.
