Pushing and Pulling on a Quiet Island
Out now on Red Brick Records is “push/pull”, album number three from the Genevan chamber chanson outfit Quiet Island. It was recorded in a ten-day session at the Tone Boutique Studio in Haarlem, Netherlands, run by Jasper Geluk (Altin-Gün, l’Eclair, Cyril Cyril).
Built on the softly humming voices of all four band members (one female, three male), Quiet Island’s songs do the name full justice. The carefully and intricately arranged vocals drift gauze-like past an instrumental backdrop that includes three calmly stroked and plucked guitars, cello and flute. Comparisons are difficult to draw – The Swingle Singers or Fifth Dimension in super slow-motion, maybe, or the rare tranquil moments of Dan Hicks & His Hot Licks. The effect, especially over the duration of the whole album, is truly other-worldly.
