Available now via Mouthwatering Records is “Complex I”, a new EP from Zurich-based singer, producer and songwriter MATONDO.
Naëmi Matondo Orlando – to give her her full name – is a truly exciting new voice on our horizon. None of the eight tracks of this self-produced mini-album fits easily into conventional boxes. Combining her warm and flexible voice with an often bass-heavy electro sound closer to the Knife than any regulation pop or R&B, this richly textured music is clearly the work of an artist with a strong vision and the conviction to stand up for it. The many subtle details hidden in the mix are further proof that Matondo knows her way around a studio. Lyrics that deal with complex subjects like the commercialisation of black women’s bodies (“Coco Butter Skin”) or the crippling expectations women face on a daily basis (“Girls Like Us”) complete the picture of a young artist who has found her voice.
