“Chic” Is the Word for Julie Meletta
Out now via Phonag Records is the charming debut EP from Julie Meletta. Raised in the Italian-speaking South of Switzerland, Julie is seriously addicted to the French “Yé-yé” pop sound of the sixties. Entitled “CHIC!” after her first hit, the EP contains four more tracks, all very much her own but deeply soaked in the memory of France Gall, Sylvie Vartan and the Stones’ Brian Jones’s friend, Zouzou.
Julie’s fondness for a bygone French pop era is rooted in her family history. Looking for better opportunities, her grandad had left his native China for Paris where he ended up starting a family. A few years later, his eldest daughter, ignoring the fact that she didn’t speak a word of Italian, followed the call of love to Ticino. Even though her grandfather on the Swiss side of the family had toured Europe as a Big Band clarinettist, Julie was not originally drawn to music as a career option. Having written poetry and short stories since childhood, she studied literature and philosophy at uni before concentrating on music. Informed by personal experience, her songs, as easy on the ear as they might be, tend to deal with difficult subjects, including the insomnia which has plagued her for many years (“CHIC!”), man’s careless treatment of the environment (“Forever”) or the tension between generations (“Gen Y”).
