Anna Aaron and Bernard “Young God” Trontin: the next chapter

Anna Aaron’s latest solo album, her fourth, comes with the mysterious title “Gummy”. It will be released via Hummus Records on 7 October 2022 in various formats, including a vinyl album housed in a gorgeous gatefold sleeve printed inside out, and including an inner sleeve with lyrics.

Anna Aaron is one of the most courageously innovative singer/songwriters in Switzerland. Any new music from her is an event. “Gummy” is no exception. In fact, the album is a direct continuation of an experiment started shortly after the beginning of the first Covid lockdown in March 2020. Having a few months earlier revived an old friendship with Young Gods drummer Bernard Trontin, the two artists began to send each other fragments of ambient music to which the other added whatever they pleased. The outcome was “Moonwaves”, an album radiant with calm intensity and shimmering beauty.

“Gummy” is once again a collaboration between Aaron and Trontin, although in a very different way. This time round, Aaron produced all songs by herself in her studio, mixing piano with electronic sounds, complete with her own sequenced beats. These beats were then sent to Trontin who translated them into the language of his own organic drum kit, thus generating a much rockier dynamic that opens up an entirely new perspective on Aaron’s captivating approach to melody and word. Drawing strongly on German electronic music from the 1970s as well as Bowie’s “Station to Station”, “Gummy” turns out to be an exceptionally warm and welcoming album.
