Alas The Sun Checking In at the Wild Honey Inn

7 May 2022 sees the release of a new album, “Wild Honey Inn”, by the summery folk-pop band Alas The Sun, signed to the Zurich-based Taxi Gauche Records.

Alas The Sun are the brainchild of singer/songwriter Sandro Raschle. A debut album released in autumn 2019 garnered plenty of positive reviews as well as daytime radio plays on all the major Swiss stations. It even turned up in the “Top 10 albums of 2019” list of SRF Virus – the “youngest” of the various channels run by SRF, the Swiss version of the BBC. It wasn’t all plain sailing from there, however. The pandemic, obviously, posed one serious setback, the split from the original singer, Anja Tremp, another.

A concept album of sorts, “Wild Honey Inn” began with a Eureka moment on a trip to Northern Ireland. Spotting a hotel with that very name, the idea came to Raschle of a collection of songs, each describing the different characters and scenes in the different rooms. Mixing fiction with his own experiences, he wrote a series of stories from the position of an observer about love won and love lost and other upheavals of life in a hotel.

Introduced by the Taxi Gauche label boss Piet Alder, Raschle found in singer/songwriter Nuria Thie the perfect new vocal partner to turn the demos he had recorded during lockdown into another fine album choc-a-bloc with creamy Fleetwood Mac-like vocal harmonies and melodies ideal for a relaxed drive down the inner Route 66.
