Seven Hits a New Groove

It’s his 12th album, no wonder Seven no longer has any doubts about where he is going. “Ich bin mir sicher” is the album’s confidence-oozing title (“I’m sure of myself”). It was released on 4 February 2022 via sevenmusic and went straight in at number 6 in the Swiss charts.
Actually, twenty years into a highly successful career with nine top ten albums even before the latest triumph, Seven has made a remarkably courageous and unpredictable step – he has begun to write and sing in German. Prompted by a challenge by the German rap group “Die Fantastischen Vier” to co-write a song in their native tongue, he had to overcome quite a few hurdles in his artistic mind to succeed. But succeed he did, and he discovered that he enjoyed expressing his feelings without the filter of a foreign language much more than he had expected. A first handful of German songs was released a couple of years ago as a mini-album, “Brandneu”.
“Ich bin mir sicher” is Seven’s first full-length German album. Having spent many years honing his Prince- and Michael Jackson-indebted funk and soul style, the new language has also prompted a considerable change in musical direction. Funky syncopations have become rare. Instead, Seven has turned towards a sound rooted more in chanson and the kitsch-free end of German “Schlagermusik”, even including a cover version of “Für immer und Dich”, a song written by the late “Ton Steine Scherben”-singer Rio Reiser, a legendary figure in 1970s German underground music.
