East Sister – Re-Meeting at the Fair
Six years after their first EP, Easter Sister at last deliver their debut album. “The Velvet Fair” was recorded in their hometown Lucerne and released on 4 February 2022 by Red Brick Chapel. It is a beguiling affair, featherlight in feel, subtle in execution and satisfyingly soothing in the effect it has on this listener, at least. The basic guitar and/or piano, bass and super-laidback drums set-up is often embellished with extra touches from all sorts of organic and electronic instruments. However, at the centre of each song is the limpid and seemingly effortless vocal interplay between the two vocalists, Lorraine Dinkel and Laura Schenk.
Dinkel and Schenk, together with Amadeus Fries, released their first EP in 2016, followed by a couple more before they lost touch with each other, all three pursuing different projects. In July 2020 they reassembled in a studio to see if something of the old spark had survived. To their great joy they realised the spark hadn’t just survived, it had actually become stronger. Everything happened so easily they barely realised they were at work. Recording the album with vintage equipment further enhanced the feeling of warmth created in these sessions. And they manage to capture it all beautifully on record.
