Bonaparte and Sophie Hunger Hobnobbing with Daft Punk
Bonaparte and Sophie Hunger, plus LCD Soundsystem’s bassist Tyler Pope and the drummer Wouter Rentema – not the most obvious combination of artists we could have thought of. But there’s an easy explanation. “One of the few great things about the pandemic”, it says in their press release, “was that musicians had enough time to form wild zip code-based combos”. Hunger, Bonaparte (that is, Tobias Jundt of the hydra-like glam orchestra Bonaparte), Pope and Rentema (also a member of Bonaparte) started their spontaneous lockdown live group for ARTE LIVE supporting closed venues such as their home club Holzmarkt in Berlin. Enjoying their venture far too much for just a handful of live performances, they decided to record an EP.
Entitled “1” and released by the group themselves on 21 January 2022, it contains cover versions of LCD Soundsystem’s “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House” (sung in German, where it becomes “Daft Punk spielen in meinem Haus”) and TC Matic’s “Putain Putain”, plus two new songs, “Reverse Gaslighting” and “Pigeons”. Delivered in a deranged post-Suicide kind of style with a big dollop of laconic trash-glam humour, all four tracks are excellent illustrations of just how much fun can be had even under the most trying circumstances when the vibe is right.
