“Sponsored Post” from Messina
Concept albums rarely come more expansive than “Sponsored Post” by art-rock quartet MESSINA from Winterthur. Winterthur is a smallish town a 25-minute train ride away from Zurich with a surprisingly vibrant music and art scene. “Sponsored Post” certainly reflects that fact.
Released on 19 November 2021 by Lauter, the album is accompanied by a videogame for mobile phones designed by quark.studio. The game in turn is accompanied by art work created by eleven artists – one artist for each level of the game, one level for each song. Oh, and each level of the game is based on a product “invented” by the band – one for each song. To celebrate the release, the band have organised an exhibition in their hometown that brings everything together, music, game and art. Considerably less complex than their concept, MESSINA’s songs – inspired by Bilderbuch and Foals, they say – don’t shy away from meaty choruses!
