Namaka Inspired by Break-up

After a handful of atmospheric and possibly Björk-inspired EPs, Namaka have at last managed to get round to an album. Entitled “Restore”, it is released on 26 November 2021 via Mouthwatering Records.

According to Wikipedia, Namaka is “the smaller, inner moon of the trans-Neptunian dwarf planet Haumea. It is named after Nāmaka, the goddess of the sea in Hawaiian mythology and one of the daughters of Haumea.” Namaka is also the electro-pop duo consisting of Sophie Adam and Philipp Schlotter. “Restore” was inspired, they say, by the need for a close analysis of the “mechanisms of a break-up”. Thankfully, their take on the matter sounds nothing like the similarly slanted new Adele album. Produced by David Odlum (Gemma Hayes, The Frames, Tamikrest, etc), “Restore” comes across as positively playful, light-hearted even. The combination of an unashamedly synthetic sound palette with big and booming spaces, skittery beats and languidly reflective vocals makes for an intriguing mix of ingredients that feels remarkably open to post-break-up experiments and experiences.
