Danitsa Drops Her “Sycle”

26 November 2021 sees the release of “Sycle”, the new album from Geneva-based singer Danitsa. It is her first under a new deal with Island Records/Universal. Still working with her usual Evidence Music crew, it features guest spots from soft-voiced British rapper Maverick Sabre and from the singer, Deva.

Born in Paris into a music-loving family, Danitsa inherited her love for reggae from her dad; her mother, meanwhile, taught her to appreciate funk, soul and hip-hop. Aged ten, she began to sing the songs her father wrote for her. Four years later, in 2008, she relocated to Geneva where she fell in with the Little Lion Sound collective, a reggae sound system/studio which helped her release a number of dubplates. “Good Coffee”, a track she recorded with fellow Genevan rapper Di-Meh, has been watched 2,6 million times on YouTube. Her debut album “EGO” came out four years ago and brought her a Swiss Music Award for “Best Act Romandie”.

“Sycle” is a remarkably diverse album, with lyrics sung in both English and French. Whilst Danitsa clearly prefers her grooves slow and slinky, she has a seriously playful approach to the arrangements of her songs. In “foodie” parlance, hers is a fusion menu taking in, and mixing up, pretty much every hot genre currently filling urban dancefloors.
