Priya Ragu Celebrates her Tamil Roots

The title is programme: “damnshestamil” is Priya Ragu’s debut album/ mixtape, released on 3 September 2021 by Warner Music UK. In further good Priya news, the Zurich-based singer and songwriter has been confirmed as one of The Great Escape’s prestigious “First Fifty”.
As a teaser for the Brighton Spring Festival, she will appear live on Wednesday 17 November 2021 at Studio 9294 in London.

Citing Lauryn Hill, Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Musiq Soulchild as well as the Bollywood composer A.R.Rahman as early influences, Priya Ragu, in collaboration with her producer brother Japhna Gold, has blended elements of Sri Lankan and Indian music with a fizzy take on R&B to create her own brand of Tamil&R&B. A handful of singles released throughout 2020 were enough to earn enthusiastic support especially in the UK, with Radio 1, 6 Music and BBC Asian Network all championing “Good Love 2.0”, swiftly followed by magazines like Vogue, iD, NME, and The Line of Best Fit. Similarly, “damnshestamil” was premiered by Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1. Her profile all around Europe was further enhanced by her presence as a guest vocalist on the new album from the London-based Jungle collective with whom she performed live at a number of large UK gigs in September.
