Reeperbahn Festival – 22 – 25 Sept 2021 – Hamburg, Germany

How we missed the Reeperbahn Festival! The hybrid version forced on us last year by the Corona virus turned out to be not bad at all, the best, certainly, that could be expected in a difficult situation. However, we are mighty glad to be physically back in Hamburg this year, returning to all the things we love about one of our favourite conference/festivals.

Let loose on the real world once again, Swiss Music Export is dying to spoil you with no fewer than three events you most definitely won’t want to miss. There is, firstly, the Swiss Contact Lounge, best for networking, coffee and croissants. Secondly, we have the Swiss Business Mixer, designed to kick-start new business connections and concepts. Last but not least there is also the music. Five of our favourite artists of the moment will perform in our showcase, “A Taste of Swiss Music”. These three events all take place in the same venue, Spielbude. All in all, ten Swiss acts will be part of the general Reeperbahn line-up – for details see below.

As ever, the best German filter coffee and croissants in town are part of the party. The Swiss Contact Lounge is presented by FONDATION SUISA and Swiss Music Export.

ALL SWISS ACTS AT REEPERBAHN FESTIVAL 2021

ANNIE TAYLOR
Annie Taylor are a four-piece classic rock outfit fronted by a woman whose name is not Annie Taylor but Gini Jungi. Their debut album, produced by the king of DIY perfection, Howlong Wolf aka David Langhard, is a sharp and bittersweet collection of shimmering guitars, great tunes and wistfully powerful vocals. Oh, and they’re a fabulous live band!

BLACK SEA DAHU
With fifty-odd post-lockdown shows already booked, taking them well into 2022, Janine Cathrein and her cohorts have not sat around idly during the last few months. With plenty of new songs written and rehearsed, a new album is not far away. As a taster they recently released a fine version of the CSNY classic “Guinevere”.

CYRIL CYRIL
Cyril Cyril are called Cyril Cyril simply because the band consists of two Cyrils. Cyril Yeterian plays accordion, banjo and a host of other more or less organic instruments. Cyril Bondi is a drummer and percussionist. Describing themselves as “muezzin without frontiers”, the Cyrils are fuelled by an irrepressible desire to explore places only they know exist.

DAGOBERT
On his fourth album „Jäger“, released 2021, Dagobert presents his music in all its diversity. Longing love hymns meet otherworldly, occult song pearls, black romanticism meets existentialism. Post-human visions of the future, treatises on Nietzsche and Lem in song form, nuances from R&B to NDW, grandiose gestures of a renegade pop reformer.

DANITSA
Danitsa recorded her first tune with her Jamaican dad Skankytone when she was ten years old. Aged 14, she moved to Geneva and hooked up with the Little Lion reggae/hip-hop collective. Since then she has forged a unique path of her own, blending elements of dancehall reggae with hip-hop, funk and everything else a musically curious artists might pick up in the super-lively Genevan music scene.

DINO BRANDÃO
With family roots in both Switzerland and Angola, multi-instrumentalist Dino Brandão draws on an exceptionally wide palette of influences to create a style he calls “Afro Psych”. Hitting the Swiss charts at the end of last year with “Ich liebe Dich”, an album he recorded with Sophie Hunger and Faber, Brando released his first solo single, “Bouncy Castle” in April 2021.

GINA ÉTÉ
Singer-Songwriter Gina Été’s debut album “Erased by Thought” was released last May via Motor/Edel. Singer-Songwriter Gina Été’s style as well as her voice – closely miked and intimate – may not be a million miles away from Björk or Kate Bush. Her lyrics, however, are much more explicitly political than the haunting quality of her music might suggest.

ILIRA
Super busy R&B singer Ilira Gashi from the Bernese Oberland has released a steady stream of singles over the past three years, partnering with Prinz Pi, Jumpa and Amber Van Day, amongst others.

L’ECLAIR
With their riotous crazed mixture of 1960s surf guitar twang, Cheesy Listening, Jamaican dub mystery, Afro-Beat and, of late, lashings of samba, the jazz-inflected instrumental combo L’Eclair offer a pretty unique and irresistible introduction to the joys of dancing.

LUZIUS SCHULER
A pianist operating in an area somewhere between Brian Eno’s wide-screen ambient perambulations, avant-garde drone experiments, and new music, Schuler’s enthralling pieces are deeply atmospheric and original.

TIM FREITAG
After a false start a decade ago, this Zurich five-piece properly got re-started with their debut album, “Monsters Forever”, released just before lockdown in March 2020. A fantastic live band, with a list of gigs well into triple figures behind them, theirs is a superior brand of unashamedly dramatic pop that doesn’t shy away from the odd eruption of rock.
