Gina Été “Erased” but Not Erased

After a handful of highly acclaimed EPs, singer/songwriter Gina Été has at last released her debut album. Entitled “Erased By Thought” it came out on Motor/Edel on 21 May 2021. Like earlier Été-records, it was produced in San Francisco by John Vanderslice who has worked with the likes of St. Vincent, Spoon, Mountain Goats and the fellow Swiss singer/songwriter, Sophie Hunger. A trained viola player by trade, Été also plays piano and synth.

Été’s musical style as well as her voice – always closely miked and intimate – may not be a million miles away from Björk or even Kate Bush. Her lyrics, however, are much more explicitly political than the haunted quality of her music might suggest. Having spent time working with refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos, and having travelled to the Mexican/Californian border during the Trump years, her lyrics are suffused with an unusually deep understanding of the reality of such situations. Still, Été is also partial to a chorus that sticks in the mind, a fact she makes clear in her description of her music as “Hybrid pop”.
