Long Tall Jefferson with His Head in the Clouds
“Cloud Folk” is the intriguing title of Long Tall Jefferson’s new album, his third. It was released on 20 November via Red Brick Chapel Records.
“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”, they say. Well, LTJ aka Simon Borer has gone and done just that! After two albums of quietly ruminative songs cast in a predominantly acoustic and folky setting, he has discovered autotune, laptop beats and all sorts of synth tricks to come up with a style he calls, yes, “Cloud Folk”. His first albums had earned Simon excellent reviews as well as the Best Emerging Artist award at the Swiss Live Talent event. Well over 300 gigs all across Europe and plenty of radio plays were the reward for his endeavours.
However, over the course of his long travels, Simon began to feel a little estranged from his creations. Songs that had once felt like a second skin were no longer such a tight fit. “I was looking for ways to make my own sound interesting for myself again”, says Simon. “It was during one of those long and classic motorway touring conversations with the guitarist in my band, Franziska, that we came up with the term “Cloud Folk”. It’s a kind of fantasy genre, a kind of imaginary folk music of the future containing all our hopes, doubts, longings and dreams.”
