Panda Lux Are Having “Fun, Fun, Fun”
No, it’s not another compilation of the Beach Boys’ greatest hits – it’s the new album from the ever more fabulous Panda Lux, their second. “Fun, Fun, Fun” was released via Irascible on 25 September.
Panda Lux are two brothers, Silvan and Samuel Kuntz, and two friends, Moritz Widrig and Janos Mijnssen, from way back when they were teenagers in the same school in St. Gallen, a small town in the East of Switzerland. Starting off as a purely instrumental outfit with adolescently proggy leanings, a good decade later they have matured into a band with a unique voice somewhere between Daft Punk, Metronomy and German chanson. Their debut album “Versailles”, released in 2017, was a strong marker which helped to build up a strong fan community in the GAS countries. “Fun Fun Fun” is shaping up to be a break-through of major proportions. Combining their superior instrumental skills – Janos studied soundtrack composition, Moritz conventional composition, Samuel and Silvan both graduated from conservatory, specialising in guitar – with a knack for fine melodies and a deep love of pop music, the band have become much more playful. The results – produced by Aaron Ahrends, himself a recording artist for Kompakt – are a joyful celebration of pop music with a dash of experiment and a deft line in smart lyrics (oh, the lyrics are in German – never mind, the music alone is worth the price of admission…).
