Kety Fusco Rises from a Daze

Even with people like Joanna Newsome and Andreas Vollenweider around, the harp has long remained an underappreciated instrument in the pages of the SME newsletter. No longer!

From the Italian part of Switzerland, the Ticino, comes Kety Fusco, a classically trained virtuoso who has played with various well-known orchestras in Switzerland and Italy. No longer satisfied with the restrictions of the classical world, she has thrown off her shackles and reinvented herself with her first solo album, “Dazed”.

“For me, life is too complicated”, writes Kety Fusco. Feeling lost, she found solace in the sound of the harp when she was only six years old. “I felt alive if I could play the music of Back, Debussy, and Ravel for eight hours a day. But as soon as I put my head out of my bubble I suffered an emotional and physical shock. When I have to face reality I feel DAZED.”

With the likes of Yann Tiersen, Jon Hopkins and Terry Riley as influences, Kety Fusco’s first solo album ‘Dazed’ is the result of a two-year process of discovery, both in terms of her approach to composition and the possibilities of her instrument. Produced by Aris Bassetti from the Peter Kernel, the band, “Dazed” combines limpid quicksilver harp runs with a backdrop of richly layered ambient as well as percussive electronica.

“Dazed” was released on 8 May via one of the oldest independent labels in the world, Milan-based Sugar Music, founded in 1932.
