Cairo Concepts at WOMEX – 23 – 27 Oct 2019 – Tampere Finland

Basel-based writer, Middle East specialist and artist Phil Battiekh has been invited to present his Cairo Concepts showcase at this year’s WOMEX Conference/Festival in Tampere, Finland. Battiekh conceived and rehearsed this showcase for three weeks during a sponsored residency in Pro Helvetia’s studio in Cairo.

According to Phil Battiekh, the showcase presents an “all-star delegation representing the cutting-edge of the beat-driven, bass and autotuneheavy sound of Cairo’s thriving Mahraganat subculture that emerged from online MP3 swapsites on to the streets.” Amongst the artists appearing live with him are Alaa 50, Belya Karnak and 3Phaz.
