Mario Batkovic rocks Womex
Womex is a travelling conference/festival dedicated to spreading the word about all aspects of world music. Bringing together more than 2300 professionals as well as around 300 performers, it is easily the most diverse music meeting worldwide. Taking place this year in the idyllic location of Las Palmas in the Canary Islands, one of the musical guests is our very own Mario Batkovic.
Nobody plays the accordion quite like Mario. Embracing the clicks, breaths and wheezes of his instrument as part of his style, he rises above and way beyond any kind of musical category. His solo performances are truly breath-taking. Sometimes minimalist and repetitive with a hint of Michael Nyman, at other times sepulchral like a monumental church organ, or again lightly complex like a Maurice Ravel chamber piece, Batkovic teases sounds from his buttons and bellows that need to be heard to be believed. His latest album was co-produced and released by ex-Portishead Geoff Barrow on his Invada label.
