Black Sea Dahu finds White Creatures
The dahu is a goat-like creature that lives in the Swiss mountains. It embodies everything that is fascinating and wonderful about evolution. What makes this animal so special is the fact that its left legs are shorter than the right. This allows the dahu to walk comfortably on the side of even the steepest of hills. How these incredible animals might have ended up by the Black Sea – where they are obviously unsuited to the terrain – remains a mystery.
We do know, however, that Black Sea Dahu are the band fronted by the Zurich-based singer-songwriter Janine Cathrein. “White Creatures” is the band’s debut album released 12 October on Mouthwatering Records, distributed by Broken Silence / Godbrain. It was recorded with producer Gavin Gardiner of the Canadian indie folk band „The Wooden Sky“ in a studio in a remote rural part of Norway.
Cathrein describes the experience as “17 cabin-fever inducing days”, with most sessions lasting between fifteen and twenty hours. If the recording process was fraught, the resulting songs don’t show it. Beautifully recorded, a wide array of ingredients includes cello, several types of guitar, percussion, and intricate vocal arrangements with Cathrein’s androgynous voice gliding over the richly textured folk-leaning music with beautiful ease.
