Anyone who has ever visited Bad Bonn either as a musician or as a member of the audience will remember the experience fondly – of that, there cannot be the shadow of a doubt. Dropped like a UFO in the middle of the rolling green hills in the centre of Switzerland, Bad Bonn has become synonymous over its 25 year existence with an exceptionally adventurous music programme, idyllic surroundings and a unique atmosphere. A stone’s throw away from a mysterious, dark lake, the small restaurant that is Bad Bonn presents live bands throughout the year. Once a year in late spring, the surrounding fields are taken over by the Bad Bonn Kilbi, one of the most exciting festivals in Europe. Boredoms, Julia Holter, Sauna Youth, Silver Firs and Knöpfel are only a handful of the artists who will make up the next edition in the first week of June 2016.

It comes as no surprise, then, that the brains behind Bad Bonn have come up with a highly unusual idea to celebrate the 25th anniversary of their venue. For the past few years, they have been asking their acts to leave a song behind as a present. Hand-written lyrics, drawings, detailed notations, chord sequences, explanations – anything was possible, and manifold were the responses by the likes of Bardo Pond, Arto Lindsay, Ezra Furman, Chicks on Speed, Mogwai, Nils Frahm, Sebadoh and Sleaford Mods. The facsimiles of 164 of these songs have now been collected in a book, “the Bad Bonn Song Book”, published by Patrick Frey Verlag, Zurich.

The book will be launched internationally with a free event on Thursday, 10 March, at the Rough Trade East shop, off Brick Lane in London. The event starts at 19:00 with a panel discussion, “Can a Live Music Venue Change a Small Town?” Participants are Tom Relleen (musician, agent at Julie Tippex agency), Luke Turner (journalist Guardian, Quietus), Christoph Schenk (journalist, Swiss television), Düx aka Daniel Fontana (Bad Bonn), and Hanspeter Künzler (freelance journalist). The discussion will be followed by a live performance by Domino-signed singer/songwriter Richard Dawson who is himself a fan of Bad Bonn.

The next day, Friday 11 March, Café Oto in Dalston will host the IMOTO Kilbi Festival, featuring an excellent selection of Bad Bonn friends from Switzerland: Strotter Inst., Julian Sartorius, Bruno Spoerri, Camilla Sparksss as well as a DJ set from Doug Shipton and Andy Votel.
