10 Swiss bands at THE END Festival, London 20 – 23 November
The North London area of Crouch End with its old-fashioned pubs and cosy cafés has traditionally been the home of many artists of all kinds. It is the perfect setting for one of the more stylish music festivals in London. Newly extended to four days and taking place in seven different venues, the End Festival will feature music industry speakers and panels for the first time this year.
Amongst the sixty or so bands scheduled to appear this year are no fewer than ten from Switzerland. They are: Evelinn Trouble, Gus McGregor, Luc Jornot, Mnevis, Moes Anthill, Penguins by Choice, Perfect Disaster Boy, Sophie Louise, Tobias Carshey, and Trio Heinz Herbert.
Evelinn Trouble, who has been residing in London since the end of 2013, will be featuring songs from her soon to be released new album which she spent the summer recording in Bristol.
Penguins by Choice from Lucerne will be presenting their new album “David”, released in November. Theirs is a witty melange of styles, ranging from ska to elektro and involving a wide range of instruments, including accordion, synths and kalimba.
Gus McGregor is an English-born guitarist and songwriter who has worked with Jamie Cullum and many others.
Luc Jornot is a singer/songwriter from Schwyz in central Switzerland who keeps it quiet with an acoustic guitar.
Sporting two synths as well as drums, guitars and bass, Mnevis from Lucerne offer their own take on Radiohead-influenced alternative rock.
Multi-instrumentalist Moes Anthill presents his own take on warped banjo-driven folk music. Originally from Zurich, Moes is at present drawing his inspiration from living in Nashville, Tennessee.
Perfect Disaster Boy is a singer/songwriter from Winterthur who uses a variety of instruments to produce a kind of folky Pavement music. His appearance in London follows a tour of Germany.
Singer/songwriter Sophie Louise from Zurich is an excellent guitarist with a jazzy approach to the blues.
Tobias Carshey has in the past worked with several local bands. In August he released a first guitar-based solo album choc-a-bloc with big melodies and impassioned vocals.
The wittily named guitar/synth/drums outfit Trio Heinz Herbert produce an intense and adventurous blend of jazz and instrumental out-there rock, resident somewhere between Beefheart, Henry Cow and Polar Bear.
