Swiss artists at SXSW and Canadian Music Week

Since its inception in 1987, South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, has developed into the most important meeting point for all those artists and music business professionals who operate on the fringes of the mainstream or outside. This year, SXSW takes place between 12 March and 17 March. Several Swiss acts will be performing live in Austin.

Bonaparte, offering their madly spectacular musical theatre extravaganza, will appear three times, at the Belmont (13 March), Javelina (14 March) and Iron Bear (15 March). Tobias Jundt’s medusa-like, Berlin-based troupe of post-Prince/post T.-Rex funk-punks have to be seen to be believed. Numbering up to twenty musicians and/or dancers on stage, theirs is a vibrant and truly unique show. After three studio albums, two remix albums and one live DVD, the band is at present undoubtedly at the peak of their powers.  Following on from their appearances at SXSW, Bonaparte will play another handful of gigs in the USA before returning to Europe for a number of dates in Switzerland, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Austria and Italy.

Heidi Happy has two performances lined up for SXSW – Tiniest Bar in Texas (14 March) and Stephen F’s Bar (15 March). As part of a North American tour, Heidi will be stopping off in Austin to showcase her 2012 album “On the Hills”. Classically trained Happy is one of the most original and instantly recognisable singer/songwriters in Switzerland. She has released four studio albums, the last two reaching the top 20 in Switzerland. She is touring the USA and Canada in a duo with Ephrem Lüchinger. Happy herself plays guitars, loops, drums, glockenspiel and melodica, whilst Lüchinger contributes various keyboards and percussion. Heidi Happy will also be appearing at the Canadian Music Week in Toronto (Supermarket, 20 March and Cameron House, 23 March).

Boy, the formed in 2007 by Valeska Steiner and Sonja Glass, will also be appearing at South By Southwest. 26 February saw the North American release of their debut album “Mutual Friends”. “Mutual Friends” came out in the GAS countries in 2011, instantly making Boy their brand of catchy, bright and subtle folk pop a popular live draw. The album reached clocked up impressive sales figures, reaching the top ten in Switzerland as well as Germany, where it remained in the charts for an incredible 43 weeks. Boy are touring in North America throughout March in support of the release of “Mutual Friends”.
